Costume Drama

October 18–December 8, 2019

The exhibition Costume Drama takes us behind the scenes to the costume studio, where dreams and reality are combined. The people who create stage costumes – the designer, the cutter, the tailor, the painter, the milliner and the costume technicians, describe their jobs beyond the limelight.

How is a theatre costume made, and what happens from the drawing board to the first night? This is a process far from mass-production. It requires professional skill, artistic sense, planning, and hours and hours of work. This is part of the magical world of the theatre. A stage costume is not just a piece of clothing for a character in a play. The stage costume is a bridge between the actor and the audience. This exhibition reveals the stage costumes and craftsmanship that can usually only be experienced by seeing a performance.

Kulturhuset Stadsteatern’s costume studio was started in 1990. Costume Drama presents a selection of costumes created for productions at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern.

The exhibition is produced by Kulturhuset Stadsteatern’s Art/Design & Fashion department and the Costume Studio.
